Skills in specific domains will be the need of the hour says Chandragupta

For many, a job in a BPO may mean speaking good English, an accent and confidence. But in the near future all this will have to be supplemented with client specific training (meaning skills in specific do¬mains like finance, HR, technology, healthcare etc). As the number and variety of services grow, a large number of new career opportunities are emerging in the BPO domain.

The last couple of years have seen India's animation sector zoom up as an outsourcing zone. Mumbai. Chennai, Banga¬lore, Hyderabad and Trivandrum are emerging as the country's major animation hubs. Enter¬tainment giants like Walt Dis-r, Warner Brothers. Imax, Sony, tc have already started out¬sourcing cartoon characters and special effects to India. The oth¬er major segment in this field is for commercials and computer games.

A multi-billion-dollar industry with excellent pay scales the call center industry is growing rap¬idly worldwide and more so in India due to some of its inher¬ent advantages like English speaking skills and time zone difference. Call centers are re¬quired in all sectors of business mainly banking, utilities, manu¬facturing, security, market re¬search, pharmaceuticals, cata¬logue sales, order desk, cus¬tomer service, technical queries (help desk), emergency dis¬patch, credit collections, food service, airline/hotel reserva¬tions etc.

Textiles

A great potential area. Infact the DHL McKinsey Study says India could be the biggest winner after China. Textiles secretary S B Mahapatra after releasing the McKinsey report said, "After the success in IT, India is all set to emerge as a global outsourcing destination for textiles with ex¬port potential of S10 billion in the next 2-3 years."

Foreign retail companies (Pil-lowtex.WestPoint Stevens, Burlington Industries) are flock¬ing to India to divert a major part of their sourcing. Mega departmental store chains (Wal-Mart and JC Penny) are eying the Indian skilled labour and many are in the process of initializing or increasing apparel outsourcing from Indian com¬panies.
